Garage Sale Etiquette

Whether you're a garage sale shopper or the one who is selling, there is a certain level of respect and ettiquette that should be up held at a yard/garage sale. Here are a few do's and don'ts for both buyers and sellers to keep in mind.

Yard Sale & Garage Sale Etiquette For Buyers

Please do....

  • Arrive at the time the sale was advertised.
  • Use small bills to pay for your items.
  • Keep your pets at home or in the car with the window down.
  • Make reasonable offers in items.
  • Understand that items are sold "as is".
  • Smoke your cigarette and discard the bud before coming up to the sale.
  • Put items back on tables where you found them.
  • Use the restroom at a near by gas station or store.
  • Please pay with cash at the time of purchase. Find a nearby ATM if you don't have enough on hand.
  • Park in the street or have someone drop you off at the driveway & park somewhere else.

Please don't...

  • Arrive early and knock on our door to open.
  • Use a $20 bill to pay for your $3.00 item.
  • Allow your dog in the garage and to poop on the lawn without cleaning it up.
  • Keep offering less when we said no.
  • Comeback later & ask for a refund.
  • Smoke in my yard or garage and leave your buds on the ground.
  • Leave tables and items wadded up and messy on the tables after looking at things.
  • Ask to use our restroom and secretly steal from our medicine cabinet.
  • Pay with a check or ask us to hold a bunch of items while you go get more cash from the ATM.
  • Park in the driveway and block the view of passerby's.

Yard Sale & Garage Sale Etiquette For Sellers

Please do....

  • Neatly spread out items on tables so that they can easily be seen.
  • Open your sale at the time you advertised.
  • Price everything.
  • Keep your children out of the way of shoppers.
  • Be attentive to shoppers and ready to answer questions and accept payments.
  • Smoke your cigarette and discard the bud before coming up to the sale.
  • Remove your signs when the sale is over.
  • Direct buyer's attention to similar items that they might be interested in.

Please don't...

  • Pile everything in boxes on the floor so that buyers can't see what you have.
  • Open at 7:30 when you said 7:00
  • Price nothing and ask people to make offers.
  • All children to ride bikes and run around the sale, keeping buyers from seeing your items.
  • Get caught up in conversation with a friend that you can't answer questions or checkout.
  • Smoke in my yard or garage and leave your buds on the ground.
  • Keep your signs out after the sale is over.
  • Pester buyers and try to sell them more when they already said they didn't want it.
